When applied to the skin, DHA reacts with amino acids present in the proteins of this layer, resulting in a reaction known as the Maillard reaction. This reaction causes a browning effect on the skin, mimicking the appearance of a natural tan. Importantly, DHA does not penetrate beyond, ensuring that it does not have any effect on deeper layers of the skin. As the outer layer of the skin naturally sheds, the tan produced by DHA gradually fades over time, typically lasting 3-10 days.
